High-Performance Battery Tabs and Current Collectors

As the demand for high-performance batteries continues to grow across electric vehicles, portable electronics, and grid-scale energy storage, the materials used in current collection and cell termination become increasingly critical.

The Role of Current Collectors in Batteries

Current collectors serve essential functions in battery cells: providing electrical pathways for current to flow between the electrode and external circuit, supporting the active electrode materials during manufacturing and operation, conducting heat away from the cell during charging and discharging, and maintaining mechanical integrity throughout the battery's service life.

Limitations of Traditional Materials

Conventional battery current collectors and tabs typically use aluminum for the cathode and copper for the anode. While these materials have proven effective, copper collectors have high density and cost issues, while aluminum collectors have lower conductivity and welding challenges.

Raytron's Bimetallic Solutions

Raytron's CCA tabs combine the best properties of both metals for battery applications with aluminum core reducing weight by 35-40% compared to pure copper, copper outer surface enabling reliable ultrasonic welding, excellent conductivity meeting or exceeding pure aluminum specifications, and cost savings of 15-25%.

Manufacturing Integration

Raytron works closely with battery manufacturers to ensure seamless integration through custom slit-to-width services, precision tolling for tight tolerance applications, cleanroom-compatible packaging, and technical support for welding process development.
