Free PV Ribbon Samples Checklist (2026)
This guide lists what to request when ordering PV ribbon samples, what to validate on receipt, sample fee policies, 3-7 day lead time expectations, and 10 questions to ask before paying. A 12-item sample verification checklist is provided for line-by-line review. No absolute claims are made; all Raytron facts are sourced from the single source of truth, companyFacts.ts.
1. What Samples and Documents to Request
Sample validation rests on a dual track: physical samples plus documentary evidence. A manufacturer that ships samples without COA/COC cannot prove material authenticity; one that ships only documents cannot validate dimensions or solderability. Buyers should request the following six categories of samples and documents together.
Specification-confirmation samples
Physical samples built to your drawing and tolerances (typically 1-2 meters), used to validate dimensions, surface quality, and solderability. Require a specification sheet and batch traceability.
COA (Certificate of Analysis)
Chemical composition analysis covering copper purity, aluminum alloy grade, and plating composition. Samples without a COA cannot be verified for material authenticity.
COC (Certificate of Conformance)
A conformance certificate listing the drawing revision, tolerances, conductivity, and mechanical property measured values for the sample batch.
Cross-section micrographs for clad conductors
For CCA, CCS, and NCC clad conductors, request 50-200x cross-section micrographs to verify cladding continuity and bond-line morphology. Mechanically bonded (rather than metallurgically bonded) samples carry delamination risk under thermal cycling.
Bending test records
Request repeated-bend test records or video, verifying no peeling or cracking between cladding and core.
Plating thickness report
A thickness measurement report for tin or silver plating (typical method: X-ray fluorescence), covering thickness and uniformity.
2. What to Validate on Received Samples
On receipt, run five core validations. Each must produce measured data and a pass/fail criterion — not subjective judgement. Validation records should be archived as the baseline for later production acceptance.
Dimensions and tolerances
Measure width and thickness with a micrometer or optical projector against the drawing tolerances. Measure 3-5 positions to verify consistency.
Conductivity (IACS%)
Measure conductivity using eddy-current or four-point probe methods against standards (e.g., IEC 60228, IEC 62641). The nominal conductivity of clad conductors should match the COC.
Solderability
Run a soldering test under a defined flux and temperature, observing wetting angle and joint morphology. Poor solderability causes cold joints and power loss.
Peel / solder bond strength
Perform a 180° peel test of the solder bond between ribbon and cell, recording peel force and failure mode.
Metallurgical bond quality
Re-check bond-line continuity in the micrograph for clad conductors. A discontinuous bond line or oxide inclusions indicate process instability.
3. Sample Fee Policies: Free, Refundable, Non-Refundable
Sample fee policies vary with specification, quantity, and customization level. The four policies below are the most common in the industry. Before paying, confirm in writing (email or contract) which policy applies, the refund terms, and who covers freight.
Fully free samples
Common for standard-specification, small-quantity (1-2 meter) confirmation samples. The manufacturer covers sample and shipping. Typically used for first contact or buyer qualification.
Paid samples, refundable on order
The sample fee is credited or refunded against the production order once placed. Common for custom specifications, special plating, or larger sample quantities.
Paid samples, non-refundable
The sample fee covers preparation and engineering cost and is not refunded. Common for deep customization, tooling, or special-alloy samples. Request an invoice and sample detail sheet.
Freight collect / freight prepaid
Freight responsibility is independent of the sample fee. For international courier, clarify prepaid (DHL/FedEx account) or collect to avoid delivery disputes.
4. Sample Lead Time Expectations: 3-7 Days
A typical industry sample lead time is 3-7 days after specification confirmation. This clock starts from confirmation of drawing, tolerances, and plating specification, and does not include international transit. Raytron's typical sample lead time is 3-7 days (counted from specification confirmation).
Factors affecting sample lead time include: whether the specification is standard, whether plating is custom, whether lines are occupied by production orders, and whether raw material is in stock. Request a written lead-time commitment at specification confirmation and clarify how delays are handled.
Manufacturers with sample lead times over 14 days, or who charge full-price non-refundable sample fees, should be scrutinized on capacity and process autonomy before payment.
5. 12-Item Sample Verification Checklist
The table below is a 12-item verification checklist spanning physical, documentary, dimensional, electrical, soldering, and traceability dimensions. Tick each item during sample acceptance and archive the record.

| 2 | COA (Certificate of Analysis) | Measured chemical composition |
| 3 | COC (Certificate of Conformance) | Drawing revision and tolerance conformance |
| 4 | Cross-section micrograph for clad conductor | 50-200x, continuous bond line |
| 5 | Bending test record | Repeated bend with no peeling/cracking |
| 6 | Plating thickness report | X-ray fluorescence |
| 7 | Width and thickness measurement | Micrometer at 3-5 positions |
| 8 | Conductivity (IACS%) | Eddy-current or four-point probe |
| 9 | Solderability test | Wetting under defined flux and temperature |
| 10 | Peel / solder bond strength | 180° peel test |

6. 10 Questions to Ask Before Paying
- ? Are samples built to my drawing or to the manufacturer standard? Is a specification sheet provided?
- ? Is the sample fee refundable on order? Is the refund credited against the order or issued separately?
- ? Does the sample fee include freight and customs? Who covers freight?
- ? What is the sample lead time, and is it counted from specification confirmation?
